Alain Gauthier makes his Pacific Opera Victoria debut in 2019 as director for an historic five-company co-production of La traviata, playing at Manitoba Opera and Edmonton Opera (2018), Pacific Opera Victoria (February 2019), Vancouver Opera (2019), and Opéra de Montréal (2020).
Alain Gauthier developed his directing skills at l'Université du Québec à Montréal. A former apprentice director at l'Opéra de Montréal, he has directed several productions for the company, including Il Tabarro/Suor Angelica, Pagliacci/Gianni Schicchi (Opus Award for Best Production of the Year), Faust, Dead Man Walking (Opus Award for Musical Event of the Year), La Bohème, L'Étoile (also at Cincinnati Opera and New York City Opera), and Elektra.
His work has also been seen at l'Opéra de Québec, Opera Carolina, Calgary Opera, Minnesota Opera, and Austin Opera.
His projects for the 2018/19 season also include Il barbiere di Siviglia at Manitoba Opera and Le nozze di Figaro at the Festival d'opéra de Québec.
