2019/20 Season: Il trittico, Flight, Carmen, and The Flight of the Hummingbird

The 2019/20 Season – A Tasting Flight of Operas

Sample an audacious balance of classic and new vintages with Pacific Opera's 2019/20 opera season. Start with the delectable trio of Puccini's 1918 IL TRITTICO – beginning with the dark, brooding IL TABARRO; followed by SUOR ANGELICA with its delicate bouquet and intensely herbal finish; and finally, GIANNI SCHICCHI, bursting with bracing, palate-cleansing effervescence.

Then discover Jonathan Dove's 1998 FLIGHT with its appealing spicy flavour and lingering complexity. Complete the season with Bizet's 1875 CARMEN – reliably heady, full-bodied, and unforgettably earthy.

In addition to the main tasting line-up, try out a new Canadian release by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas and Maxime Goulet: THE FLIGHT OF THE HUMMINGBIRD is light and fiery, with undertones of sweetness and smoke.

Puccini's classic 1918 collection comprises three distinct works that, when presented together as the composer wished, provide a rare and unforgettable experience.

  • Il tabarro (The Cloak): Dark and brooding. A noir thriller of infidelity and murder.
  • Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica): Delicate and sweet. A lyric tragedy of loss, suicide, and forgiveness
  • Gianni Schicchi: Bracing and astringent. A wicked black comedy full of devilish chicanery.

A true classic, Bizet's Carmen is a rich, heady infusion, instantly recognizable, utterly unforgettable. Perfect for the novice and the aficionado alike, it brims with audacious harmonies and irresistible melodies that have become part of popular culture.

As for the character of Carmen herself, there is no one quite like her – wilful, charismatic, unexpectedly vulnerable. Carmen remains an opera for all time.
