CEO Ian Rye has been with Pacific Opera Victoria since 2006, serving as Director of Production and Director of Artistic Administration before becoming CEO in 2016.
During his time at POV he has participated in the creation of some 40 new productions, the marked enhancement of production scope and scale, and the expansion of POV's artist training education and outreach activities.
Ian has taken a leadership role in orchestrating a co-production model that has resulted in POV productions being seen on opera stages across the country. He has stewarded youth and education programs, community collaborations, and the commissioning of new works, and he was key to the creation and establishment of The Baumann Centre as a community hub for increased participation in opera.
Ian recently completed his MBA through Royal Roads University. His work included an audience research consulting project for Opera America, which is using his findings to develop methodologies and resources to help opera companies across North America to undertake effective audience development.
Before joining POV, Ian was Production Manager at the Belfry Theatre where he supported an expansion to six mainstage productions and a second-stage series and the restoration of a heritage performance facility and where he stewarded the enhancement of a collaborative artistic process and enhanced production values.
Ian is also an experienced theatre and opera designer, with a practice that includes work in scenery, lighting, and sound. His designs have played at a number of notable stages across Canada, including Alberta Theatre Projects, the Arts Club Theatre, the Belfry Theatre, Canadian Stage Company, Chemainus Theatre, Malaspina University, Manitoba Theatre Centre, Nanaimo Festival Theatre, Neptune Theatre, Tarragon Theatre, Theatre Calgary, Touchstone Theatre, the Victoria Dance Series, Ballet British Columbia, and the Vancouver Playhouse.
Ian's designs for Pacific Opera Victoria include the world première of Mary's Wedding; Ariadne auf Naxos and South Pacific in concert.
Ian studied theatre production and design at Ryerson and the Banff Centre for the Arts and is an alumnus of Opera Americal's Leadership Intensive program. He is a member of the Arts and Culture Master Plan Advisory Group for the City of Victoria.
